as a consumer of the food industry in the USA and even in other western countries with more theoretically ethical approaches toward food production, you are unwittingly complicit in some aspect of exploitative business practices that are built into the industry as a result of capitalism and you can’t choose to opt out of this reality but instead only limit your participation in it. this extends even beyond the food you eat, as the whole foods franchises and overpriced vegetarian restaurants you open as a result of your “cruelty-free” diet increasingly help gentrify neighborhoods and force poorer residents out while doing nothing to alleviate the food deserts they instead have to live in

I believe the myth exists because quite frankly the media, social justice organizations and we the public tend not to focus on it. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
